Do you remember the first story you heard as a child? It would be safe to assume you don't. Why, you ask? Because chances are that you heard your first story when you were less than a few months old. Stories are an integral part of our lives. Stories have been told from time immemorial - by mothers lulling their babies to sleep or chiding their toddlers to finish their glass of milk, by teachers getting their students to settle in school, by uncles and aunts to engage children from time to time, and the list can go on. What makes stories so popular is their ability to instantly capture young minds and carry them into a world of fantasy.
My early memory of stories was when all cousins would eagerly wait for our thatha (Grandfather, in Kannada and Tamil) to wake from his afternoon siesta. We would huddle around him waiting for the tale-of-the-day. His stories ranged from how British-ruled India was, to his childhood days at his village. Some stories were fun and had us yelling for more. Some others left us thoughtful, questioning or sometimes just accepting the ways the world works. Stories are fun and learning all at once.
I recently read somewhere, “A story's words only have so much impact on your child; it's the storytelling that leaves a lasting impact!” I couldn't agree more. If well told, a story can enthrall young minds and nurture them to question the boundaries of possibility. Anybody can tell a story, but to say it in a way that can leave the essence of it ingrained in the mind, takes talent and passion alike. The narrator’s love for the tale is contagious and can carry the listeners from their seats right into the story.
We are a group working moms in the wonderful city of Bangalore, who trying to find the elusive work/life balance over weekdays. Come weekend, we take off on adventures with our children. Sometimes it is outdoors and sometimes, into the enchanted world of our favourite books.
We are now donning mom-preneur hats and want to share the magic of stories with the rest of the world. We love our books and are super excited about presenting the favourite tales from our childhood in front of you.
On such a special day like today, the World Storytelling Day, we are launching our dream project, StoryOwls.
If you have a birthday party or a playdate at the park we will be happy to engage with your children for a fun story telling session.
Also, look out for our story telling sessions in a library or park near you.
