#StoryOwlsReviews: When I'm Feeling - series by Trace Moroney

As usual, there is a story behind these books. One of our friends, on their (then) recent trip to Japan, had picked up some second hand books for their (then-future) son. So when we had a haul session, I chanced upon a book titled “When I feel Scared”. It has a picture of a very endearing bunny, and each page described, in the best way possible, when one feels scared. Like when we’re bullied, or when we see an object we cannot recognize etc. All from the bunny’s perspective.  The book then goes on to acknowledge fears.

I instantly fell in love with this book. My daughter was just about a year old, and didn’t really care about being scared. She was the most fearless in the family. But somehow the book caught my attention.  It is part of a series of six books, that talk about basic emotions that we go through daily: Angry, Scared, Loved, Happy, Sad and Kind.

These books, with very simple, relate-able illustrations, convey what the emotion means. This makes it very easy for a child to realize what emotion they’re going through, without us explaining.

The text may not be so easy for a toddler/pre-schooler to understand, but pictures make it work. The older kids may benefit from both the text and the pictures for sure. The bright colours make them very attractive for a child to pick it up themselves and read.

My daughter calls them “Peter Rabbit” books (from the rhyme) and chooses a colour she wants to read.

There are some aspects that may be tough to comprehend, like when a loved one is gone (and the child feels sad) but I feel this book can be relatable, age no barrier.

I’ve tried looking for the set across bookshops and online stores, but they’re really hard to find. I finally sourced mine from the source (Trace Moroney is an Australian author), when a couple of friends were vacationing in Australia.

If you do lay your hands on these books, I’d fully recommend buying them. Is there a similar series, or a similar book that you’ve read? Please share with our community. Thanks for stopping by!

#StoryOwlsReviews The Lion King

World Book Day just passed by. Our earlier goal was to start our Book Review series on this blog on that auspicious day. However, the work week got hectic and so Storyowls bring you the first book review, a couple of days late. Expect a book review every week henceforth :)  The Book: The Lion King The Author: Don Ferguson Appropriate age group : 3 to As long as you want to read! The first time I heard about this book was when I was tuned into Radio and they were playing "Hakuna Matata"... I fell in love with the concept of 2 words turning into a problem free philosophy. Most of us would be familiar with the movie. The book pretty much is a summary of the movie. Lion King is all about this young lion cub Simba who is born as a future king to the animals of the Pride Rock! He is quite a carefree, brave guy who enjoys going on adventures, with his friend Nala a lioness cub, to prove that he can handle everything but then keeps falling into trouble.  ...

Children's evening with Animals!

We rang in our last event for the month of April with a birthday party. The birthday boy a 5yr chirpy young fellow is an enthusiastic story listener. Our main challenge was to keep a group of 15 kids of age group 4-5 yrs engaged. As this age group would get bored easily with just words , we had to work on a story which would make the story telling interactive . We finally shortlisted "The Lion King" for the event. This was a story that the birthday boy hadnt heard of. On the day of event it took us hardly a few seconds to gather the kids. All of them were looking forward for the story telling (seems it was mentioned in the invite). As we started with the story telling we realized that none of the kids had seen the movie and were all new to the characters in the story. This worked in favor for us. We slowly unfolded the castle rock scene with "Circle of Life"...Soon the kids were engrossed with Simba and his antics, hyenas laughing all around the room, relatin...
